The quality of the Tukituki river

The quality of the Tukituki river

The Slime/Algae living in the Tukituki river is called Phosphorus. The Hawke's Bay Regional Council think that it may be caused by the amount of light reaching the streambed, the bed of the river is like the the frequency of floods in the river.  Plant nutrients, particularly nitrogen and phosphorus , sunlight and water temperature determine the amount of slime and algal growth in rivers and streams.

Ways that we could reduce the Algae: We could try and keep the farmers stock from crossing the rivers and entering bacteria onto the water.  The Council could find some sort of Algae eating fish in the river to help slow the growth. They could do some sort of bacterial treatment to the water. While they do that they could close down the river and see what the treatments do. Since the sunlight is affecting the Algae maybe make some sort of shelter over the main parts of the Algae. Maybe plant some overhanging trees?

Inquiry unexplained creatures

This term our topic in inquiry is explaining the unexplained. Which means explaining in detail creature or legend that some people believe in and some don't eg. The lochness monster or bigfoot. I'm doing a legend about a road called Talamini. On that road some people have heard a mysterious moaning. Here is what i have write so far...

Weird NJ have done many articles on the moaning of Talamini road. People have reported hearing a mysterious moaning on Talamini road Bridgewater. Legend has it that maybe it could be a  ghost of a person who had been in a car crash. At this exact spot a little girl was said to be killed in a car accident. Her ghost is said to come out when people drive more than thirty five miles per hour. She warns you to slow down with a very faded moan. You have to listen very well to be able to hear it. But you would pretty silly to go that fast because the road is a very sharp corner! River drive Totowa is now known as “Annie’s road” named after the accident the happened to the little girl.

Timbernook

                                         Timbernook

Timbernook is a lovely place in Hastings. It is filled with nature, birds calling, animals and some great activities. Sheppard house were lucky enough to go on a trip each to Timbernook. Yesterday rm 11 went and we learnt heaps!

We had to do activities that not only included physical ability but mental ability. We scavenged around the grounds to find different resources to resemble a human body. We were split into three groups. Each group came up with a a team name. I was in the APPLE TREE SHOVELERS! As you see we had to let nature inspire us with the name.

When we got free time there was lots to do. Some people went on a rope swing and landed into a brown like gunge ( I was sure that there was some sort of poo in there because all the boys smelt like poop. Or that could just be them?).

Roasting marshmallows was fun. Once they were done you would pull of the outer layer of the marshmallow. In the middle would be heaven! Creamy, gooey, fluffy mellow. When everyone was done with smelling like poo we sat around a fire. Listening to scary stories eating plain flavored popcorn. It wasn't the best but it was better than maths!

I would recommend going to Timbernook if you want to learn about the outdoors or just want to get away from the city life. I would Recommend Timbernook!

Problem: The Get Ready Get Thru website says that we need an Emergency Survival kit and top of the list is a torch and spare batteries.

At electronics I am going to design and make a emergency light for myself.
